Miller Parker
January 23, 1945 - October 28, 2023
Real estate developer, television and radio producer, entrepreneur, activist, and philanthropist, Miller Parker was born, at home in North Philadelphia, in a driving snowstorm in 1945. Delayed until the following day, the doctor put the wrong date on the birth certificate— an error that would go on to vex Miller for his entire life.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, Miller returned to Philadelphia and began a career in communications that spanned three decades, including as an account representative with WCAU TV/CB; worked with Captain
Kangaroo and Gene London; developed the Miss America pageant weekend in Philadelphia (Franklin’s Philadelphia Pageant Weekend); and later went on to produce television and radio programs. Among his other accomplishments, Miller owned
WHAT Radio, produced stage plays, special events, and community fairs, and was instrumental in the creation of the Philadelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park in West Parkside, an area he championed for many years while working at the
Philadelphia Business & Technology Center.
Miller was a strong supporter of Philadelphia’s arts and culture institutions, among them The Mann Center for the Performing Arts as a Board Member; the Barnes Foundation, as Ambassador; the Japanese American Society; and The Franklin Institute, where he was a champion of diversity in science education.
