About "Save the Dogs"

“Save the Dogs” is inspired by Toby Tate’s experience studying abroad in Türkiye. While meeting his Turkish extended family for the first time, Tate discovered the cümbüş, a traditional Turkish instrument, and began exploring new sonic landscapes. ”Save the Dogs” incorporates field recordings of metro stations, families drinking çay and laughing at dusk, the echoing streets of Istanbul, and protests against animal cruelty in Ankara following the Turkish government’s legalization of euthanasia for stray animals. On ”Save the Dogs,” the pounding of street drummers and shimmering synthesizers fuse these diverse worlds into a cohesive whole.

Acknowledgments

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Benjamin Broening, for his mentorship and guidance throughout the process of composing and creating this album, and throughout my entire collegiate journey. I would also like to express my appreciation for the guidance of Mr. Kevin Harding, who taught me “Valseana” and expanded my ability to express myself on the guitar. Without them, this recital would not be possible.

I also want to give a special thank you to Dr. Andy McGraw, Ms. Veronica Clinton, Dr. Bruno Alcalde, Dr. Jessie Fillerup, and Dr. Mike Davison for their mentorship and support.
