SYNOPSIS

MTSU Theatre and Dance is excited to present our 2023 Spring Dance Concert, featuring performance pieces choreographed by MTSU Dance Faculty Aaron Allen Jr., Kim Holt, Alexandra Winer, MTSU Dance student Catherine Bright, and guest artist Kia Smith.

"LOVE, TERRY" - Aaron Allen, Jr.

Music: Babaza, Luis Radio; Moves (House mix), Cody Currie; Tonight is the Night (Woody Bianchi Retouched), Betty Wright

Cast: Aaliyah Akins, Bryleigh Anders, Jasmine Dillon, Ashley Dominguez, Grace Holland, Kels Jones, Lauren Lester, Rhonwyn Moore, Jasmine Morgan, Brittany Tillery, Elizabeth Woods 

Choreographer’s Note: Love, Terry is a contemporary house piece honoring my late grandmother, Terry Allen, as well as a celebration of grandparents. Choreographically this work explores black social dance, early house dance, and contemporary modern movements.  

 


 

"SIREN" - Alexandra Winer

Choreographer’s Note: What calls to you and draws you in? And what pulls you back to safety? The fascination remains and we must learn how to quell it.  

 


"BY DESIGN" - Kim Holt

Music:  New York Counterpoint: I. Fast, New York Counterpoint: II. Slow, New York Counterpoint: III. Fast performed by Steve Reich and Evan Ziporyn 

Lighting Design: Lauren Roddy 

Costume Design: Trish Clark 

Dancers: Xan Barrell, Tori Bascou, Rae Bracey, Morgan Hayes, Kels Jones, Gracie McCooey  

Choreographer’s Note: This dance is inspired by the architecture of the music. It uses ballet movement to explore the nuances of the music.  

 


 

"SORRY, IT'S OCCUPIED" - Catherine Bright

Dancers: Delaney Arenz, Rae Bracey, Joy Echols, Miranda Laurent, Rachel Osucha, Cara Paty, Laci Rose, Mariale Salcedo, Brittany Tillery  

Choreographer’s Note: This piece explores the perception of others and the self in a constantly evolving and mobile world throughout the course of a singular day. The audience is invited to view the way that we as humans often process our emotions and how we are each occupied with our own private thoughts despite being constantly surrounded by others.
