Dr. C. Michael Porter is the Artistic Director of Critical Mass Vocal Artists—Idaho’s semi-professional chamber choir. Michael held conducting positions at Brevard College and Bloomsburg University, and has conducted choirs in South Korea, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. Michael has extensive experience conducting operatic and musical theater works. He has conducted such works as L’Orfeo, Dido and Aeneas, Così fan tutte, L’elisir d’amore, Rigoletto, Gianni Schicchi, Trouble in Tahiti, Brundibár, Into the Woods, and A Little Night Music; and was the music director for All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914.
Michael has garnered much recognition for his performance and scholarship of J. S. Bach. He studied with Helmut Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival conducting masterclasses and has conducted numerous works by Bach: including the Weihnachtsoratorium, Magnificat, Mass in G, and seventeen cantatas. Michael has been awarded grants from the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the American Bach Society for his biannual concert series on Bach’s sacred cantatas—Universal Ties: Diverse Perspectives in Bach’s Sacred Cantatas.
Michael presents often on J. S. Bach: most recently “Parody Techniques in J.S. Bach’s Pfingstag Cantatas,” and “Speaking Volumes: Finding Connections Through J. S. Bach in Ingmar Bergman’s Silence.” His reviews of recordings and performance editions of Bach’s music can be found in the Choral Journal and the Choral Scholar.
