Words From The Director

Greetings from the heart of foggy London! Or more precisely, dear audience, from the nooks and crannies of 221B Baker Street, aptly labeled apt 2B. There one might find a curious detective named Sherlock Holmes. But let's be clear: she's not one for conventional pleasantries, and certainly not for being called Shirley!

I was first introduced to playwright Kate Hamill’s delightfully ingenious work at her 2016 Off-Broadway production of SENSE AND SENSIBILITY. It was my favorite show of the theatre season and I returned to see it again with my family. Hamill is one of the rare writers with a knack for successfully adapting classic literature to the stage. Her plays are refreshingly original, whip-smart, and they always put women front and center. It’s such a treat, some 8 years later, to direct her latest, MS. HOLMES AND MS. WATSON - APT. 2B.

In this rendition, we see a radical twist: the iconic detective duo of Holmes and Watson are reimagined as formidable women. Their adventures, infused with cheeky humor and depth, challenge traditional perceptions of gender and invite us to see familiar characters in a fresh light.

It's often said that laughter is the best medicine, and I wholeheartedly agree. Laughter has a unifying power, transcending differences, and forging connections. Underneath the pratfalls, the face slaps, and the rapid-paced dialogue, our story is a heartfelt narrative about two remarkable women, each from different corners of the globe, joining forces for a shared purpose. In an era dominated by digital distractions (or “the googles” and “blegs” as our Luddite detective Holmes puts it) this production celebrates the in-person bond between performers and audience, emphasizing the unique joy of collective laughter.

So, brace yourselves for a rollicking ride, where wit meets whimsy, and where the game, as they say, is afoot!
