RLT is proud to partner with El Pueblo on our production of In the Heights. Founded in 1995, El Pueblo’s mission is to build collective power through leadership development, organizing, and direct action so that the Latin American community and other marginalized communities control our own stories and destinies. They focus on policy change, civic engagement, youth and adult leadership, and cultural celebration and expression. Due to the pandemic, El Pueblo shifted its work to address immediate community needs with a Mutual Aid Fund, food distribution, and COVID-19 testing and vaccination efforts. They recently launched a Community Action ID Program in order to provide undocumented community members a form of identification they can use in Wake County. To learn more about their work, visit ElPueblo.org and follow them on social media.

Letter from the Director

Letter from the Director

Paciencia y fe. Patience and Faith. You will hear this refrain throughout In the Heights, and it resonates beyond the world of the play.

I have loved this show since its debut on Broadway in 2008. As a mixed-race Latin artist, it was thrilling to see a show featuring so many characters who looked like me. As a fan of hip-hop,  it was equally exciting to hear a Broadway show that sounded like the records I grew up listening to with my friends. So when I became RLT’s Artistic Director nearly eight years ago, I wanted to produce this show on the Sutton Stage. But in order to make that happen, we had work to do. In order to do it right, I had to have paciencia y fe.  For the past seven years, RLT has committed to telling stories that are more reflective of our entire community, and we have implemented practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion aimed at making all members of our community identify this as a brave space to live their best creative lives. We have made mistakes along the way, but we persist with patience and faith because we believe the best art happens when we bring all experiences into the work.

This path mirrors the process Lin Manuel-Miranda went on to bring this musical to life. He started In the Heights in 1999 as an unknown artist and student at Wesleyan University. That first draft looked very different than what you will see today. He went through years of rewrites and setbacks before the show made its Broadway debut in 2008, launching his remarkable career. In spite of all the challenges of bringing his idea to life, he persevered -  with patience and faith -  to make his dream a reality.

RLT first announced our plans to produce In the Heights in February of 2020. As you all know, the global pandemic put a stop to those plans in March of that same year. It has been a long road to recovery, but through it all, the organization has remained committed to bringing this story to this stage because we believe in one of the central themes of the musical - you can find “home” in your community no matter where you are from.

I am excited for you to experience the work of this incredible cast and crew. Each one of them is a member of this great community. After more than a two year delay, we get to share this moment with you - our community. Thank you for the part you have played in making RLT a true community theatre, and we would not be here without your support. Together, with a little Paciencia y Fe, I believe our best years are ahead of us.
