Bho Shambho
Bho Shambho is a famous Indian Bhajan (devotional song) popularized by Carnatic musicians. It is a prayer to Lord Shiva, a member of the Holy Trinity (Trimurti) of Hinduism. Hindu mythology comprises thousands of gods and millions of stories. This piece focuses on the adjectives used to describe Lord Shiva, born from the various stories based on him.
The performance is a fusion of the two Indian classical dance forms, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi (both originating from South India), choreographed to this devotional song and is divided into four parts.
The first part is a Shloka, a devotional poem, describing the polyonymous Lord Shiva. The second part describes Lord Shiva as the merciful host and origin of the river Ganges, also considered the Goddess Ganga. In the third part, Lord Shiva is described as being devoid of characteristics and beyond everything in the past, present, and future. The fourth and last part starts off with a dance by Lord Shiva and his wife Goddess Parvathy to the rhythmic beat of drums. After this, the piece moves on to describe Lord Shiva as He who is clad by the sky, the God who is pure and forever dancing. He is the Lord of everything.
Additional Trivia: Lord Shiva is also known as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance.
