Eldissoquy Program Notes

Written by Connor Gibbs

The meaning of a piece of music is dependent on the listener's personal experiences. The title, Eldissoquy, is an artificial word that combines elements of the words possible, diss, soliloquy, and decay. This word was also created as if to be the name of a mythological event that has not occurred, which is partially inspired by major events that appear in different religions.

This work takes inspiration from events and natural phenomena taking place in the 21st century. We live in a time which has an unclear future: whatever that future is, that will be our Eldissoquy. There are moments of repose as well as moments of despair. Featured at the end of this work are the sounds of styrofoam activated by bows, which creates a piercing yet light sound. The extremely grating yet thin duality of this sound creates the need for resolution to this work's tension.

Despite alternating motions and emotions, the nature of the Eldissoquy is up to you: the listener. How will you define our future?

Creativity Club

Creativity Club is a weekly meeting of young composers and those interested in uncovering the mysterious process of musical creativity. Within a supportive environment, students nurture their skills in music composition and other innovative approaches to problem-solving. Creativity Club culminates annually in a performance of new orchestral compositions performed by the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Students involved in any of the SDSYO ensembles are able to attend. Meetings are held on Sundays at 2:15p at Augustana University, room 145.
