My time at Shenandoah University has truly awakened the solo artist inside of me. With my musical background mainly consisting of ensemble singing and teaching, I have struggled to connect with music soloistically. The resources and encouragement I have received from my professors, mentors, colleagues, and fiancé these past two years have completely transformed my love for singing and performing. The songs selected for today’s performance are meant to celebrate this journey, and act as a sampler of all the different sides of music I have come to love- including musical theater, pop rock, jazz, and some contemporary pop a cappella. I hope you enjoy!
Each song I sing here is a reflection of my journey with my mental health throughout graduate school. From the most poignant of lyrics in Happy Ending, “And will I ever know what it’s like to be fine without pretending that my skin isn’t crawling, my demons are calling and tearing me to shreds?” to the anxiety ridden line in Waving Through a Window, “No slipping up if you slip away” I relate to each of these songs at least in part. I made it to this point because I realized that no matter what kind of music I make or work I do, I will always be an advocate for mental health.
