Musicians of the New York “The Tonight Show” Band

The Tonight Show band was first established in 1954, growing into a prominent jazz ensemble under Skitch Henderson and later Doc Severinsen during the Johnny Carson era. After Carson's departure in 1992, Jay Leno ushered in a smaller band led by Branford Marsalis and then Kevin Eubanks. The tradition of a large orchestra ended with this shift and continued through Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon’s tenure.

The program has been hosted by six comedians: Steve Allen (1954–1957), Jack Paar (1957–1962), Johnny Carson (1962–1992), Jay Leno (1992–2009 and 2010–2014), Conan O'Brien (2009–2010) and Jimmy Fallon (2014–present).
