We are so delighted to be the U.S. College and University premiere of this wonderfully hilarious Tony Award-winning musical!
The first time I saw Something Rotten! in New York City I was immediately taken with how much heart there was in the show, while still being a big, old-fashioned, dancing musical. Where else but in musical comedy could you create a world where Shakespeare is a rock star of Mick Jagger proportions, lords and ladies tap dance their way through the streets of London, a determined wife becomes the first crusader for equal rights for women, and two brothers with the unfortunate last name of Bottom search to make their mark on the top of the theatrical world? All with witty dialogue and show tunes that you will leave the theatre humming? I knew immediately that I wanted to do the show at Shenandoah.
Through some clever negotiations, calling in some New York favors, and hard work by the theatre division, we were able to secure the rights to be the first university to share this beautiful show with our patrons and the community!
As I begin my fourth year at Shenandoah and our national profile continues to flourish, it is vital that our students are given the opportunity to work with New York industry and Broadway-based professionals. To that end, during the rehearsal process we were lucky to have Steve Bebout join us to work with the company. Bebout was the Broadway Associate Director and the Director of the National Tours for Something Rotten!. Upon seeing a run of the show, he was incredibly complimentary of the talent and training that our students are receiving here in the musical theatre program. His insight was invaluable and we are grateful that he was able to join us!
We have an embarrassment of riches in the theatre division at Shenandoah. I must thank my incredible creative team for making this experience joyous from the very start. Our music director, Patrick Brady, is truly brilliant (and quite literally a Broadway icon), and the amazing new coordinator of musical theatre dance, Broadway veteran Shylo Martinez, has done wonderful work with all of the choreography (and there is LOTS of choreography). To have a team that collaborates with kindness, laughter and incredible knowledge of this industry is so refreshing and makes coming to rehearsal and work blissful every day.
Something Rotten! is a huge undertaking for the Shenandoah Conservatory season, requiring Elizabethan costumes with a modern flair, multiple sets that travel from the streets to inside a theatre to rock concerts, and lights that have to help us believe the Renaissance is coming to life. Many thanks to the brilliance of William Pierson (scenic designer), Jennifer Flitton Adams (costume designer), Andrew Carson (lighting designer) and Ethan Livers (sound designer). Senior Austin Huehn (production stage manager) and I have worked on three shows here at Shenandoah and he is the absolute best!
Finally, the dedication, hard work, and talent of this cast and crew have brought Something Rotten! to life in ways that I only imagined. I am beyond proud of their accomplishments.
Welcome to the Renaissance — Shenandoah Style!
