Julia Derflinger is an internationally performing American operatic lyric mezzo soprano of Shenandoah Valley ancestry. She most recently won a National Opera Association Division 1 first place award for her work as a featured soloist, performer, and costume supervisor of Shenandoah University’s 2022 opera production of Hydrogen Jukebox by Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg.
Her recent credits also include being a featured monologist and ensemble member of Shenandoah Conservatory’s Native American Inspirations world premiere in the Venice Biennale Musica, both assistant directing/costume coordinating under Ella Marchment and performing in Shenandoah Conservatory opera’s Hydrogen Jukebox, Gothic Opera and The New World of Opera productions, co-directing the OPERAtunity Mozart scenes production and covering Hermia in Shenandoah Conservatory opera’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Spring 2023).
She is incredibly grateful to God, her partner, family, and mentors for their love and steadfastness. She would most specifically like to thank her role model Ella Marchment for never giving up on her potential and seeing her through to her successes, and Nancy Gustafson for opening her eyes to positive teaching and a joyful and refreshing approach to a life in opera. Thank you all for your support over her degree!
Julia Derflinger is from the studio of Nancy Gustafson. This recital is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master of Music in Performance (Voice).
