Blending monologue, literary reading, live music, and movement, My Broken Language, written and directed by Quiara Alegría Hudes, is an author’s recollection of life growing up in en el barrio in Philadelphia during the 90’s, in a Puerto Rican family held together by women: recalling the uplift, the grief, the spirits, the dance. Navigating the margins of many communities, they forge a language all their own. In the precise ballet of the author’s abuela’s method of cooking rice; in the intimacy of dyeing her cousin’s hair while contemplating the distances between their sociological experiences, smooshing the paste into her scalp; Hudes evocative text constantly instigates a profound exploration into what cannot always be said with words.
