This is a virtual stream of a reading of A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas to celebrate the holiday season. This streaming production was created remotely with each actor recording from their location in keeping with current safety precautions.
Undermain Artistic Director Bruce DuBose narrates and members of Undermain’s talented company of actors bring to life the famed Welsh poet’s childhood memories of snowbound Christmastime in his small Welsh town beyond which, from a child’s point of view, lay a bigger world of mystery and excitement. Holiday reminiscences told through festive storytelling, song and music for the whole family to enjoy.
Welsh Carol's (also known as Awake Were They Only) Welsh title is "Roedd yn y wlad honno" which means "It Was In That Country" in English, and it was written by Owen Roberts in the around the year 1800. It's lyrics are based upon the Gospels, specifically Luke 2:8.
Suo Gân is a Welsh lullaby with a traditional welsh melody. Not much is known about it, although it's lyrics are generally attributed to the Welsh folklorist Robert Bryan.
Deck the Halls is a traditional Welsh tune, first given lyrics by the poet John Ceiriog Hughes under the name Nos Galan and it was primarily a New Years song. The melody was popularized by Mozart when he used it in a piano and violin concerto. As it gained popularity its first English verses appeared in 1881, and the lyrics and subsequent mass popularity appropriated it as a Christmas Carol.
Other songs heard in the program are;
An instrumental version of the Welsh Carol, Oikan Ayns Bethlehem - Traditional
Good King Wenceslas - Traditional
Three Welsh Carols
Deck the Halls
Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
'Tis the season to be jolly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Don we now our gay apparel
Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la.
Troll the ancient Yule-tide carol
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.
See the blazing Yule before us.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Follow me in merry measure.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
While I tell of Yule-tide treasure.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Fast away the old year passes.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Hail the new year, lads and lasses
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Sing we joyous, all together.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Heedless of the wind and weather.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.
Welsh Carol
Awake were they only those shepherds so lonely
On guard in that silence profound
When color had faded
When night time had shaded
Their senses from sight and from sound
Lo, then broke a wonder, then drifted asunder
The veils from the splendor of God
When light from the Holy, came down to the lowly
And heav’n to the earth that they trod
May light now enfold us, O Lord for behold us
Like shepherds from tumult withdrawn
Nor hearing nor seeing all others care fleeing
We wait the ineffable dawn
O Spirit all-knowing thou source overflowing
O move in the darkness around
That sight may be in us true hearing to win us
Glad tidings where Christ may be found
Suo Gân
Sleep my baby, at my breast,
’Tis a mother’s arms round you.
Make yourself a snug, warm nest.
Feel my love forever new.
Harm will not meet you in sleep,
Hurt will always pass you by.
Child beloved, always you’ll keep,
In sleep gentle, mother’s breast nigh.
Sleep in peace tonight, sleep,
O sleep gently, what a sight.
A smile I see in slumber deep,
What visions make your face bright?
Are the angels above smiling,
At you in your peaceful rest?
Are you beaming back while in
Peaceful slumber on mother’s breast?
Do not fear the sound, it’s a breeze
Brushing leaves against the door.
Do not dread the murmuring seas,
Lonely waves washing the shore.
Sleep child mine, there’s nothing here,
While in slumber at my breast,
Angels smiling, have no fear,
Holy angels guard your rest
