Letter from the Producer

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 31st annual It’s a Grand Night for Singing!I can’t believe it has been 31 years! The energy and excitement is still as palpable as it was in 1992, during the FIRST It’s a Grand Night for Singing! We prepare this show in five weeks, starting the day after UK commencement, with the time, energy and talents of a creative team that averages 19 years each with the production (or a total of 279 years). It is through our collaborative efforts we are able to put this show together and offer this for our students and our community.

What you also may not know about Grand Night, is that each year we create a different show. No two shows are alike, and each year we build something new. This isn’t like a theatre show that has a book and a script. During the five weeks, we experiment, we compose, we "decompose," and we try to find the right songs for the right singers. This takes a lot of trial and error and a lot of hearing the different voices in the cast. It has been a wonderful process and I am always encouraged by the outcome.

The things we are able to do here at UK Opera Theatre, creative endeavors like Grand Night as an example, would not be possible if it were not for your continued support; your support in purchasing tickets, your support in bringing friends to see our shows, your financial support, and in many cases your legacy gifts. When you are thinking about where to invest your philanthropic gifts, we hope you will consider UK Opera Theatre.

Thanks for all that you do to make what we do possible! We hope you enjoy the show!

Sincerely,
Everett McCorvey
Director of UK Opera Theatre

Letter from the School of Music Director
As the 2022–2023 academic year winds down for the UK School of Music with the start of the summer term and our annual Grand Night summer performances, I’m struck by how much has changed during the five years that I have been the Director of the School of Music. Our faculty, staff, and students have lived through a global pandemic whose impact continues to shape our operations and our approach to educating students. We’ve welcomed numerous new faculty members into our ranks and have wished others our very best as they retire from UK. We’ve welcomed new cohorts of students each fall and have graduated others. One of the most important constants in the midst of change, however, has been the love of live music making exhibited by our patrons and audience members. Some of you are regular attendees at opera performances. Some of you attend the School of Music’s biggest annual events, such as Grand Night and Collage. Some of you may attend a number of different kinds of performances by both instrumental and vocal / choral students throughout the academic year. Regardless of what draws you to campus, we’re thrilled that you’re here with us. Your presence proves again and again that the musical arts are at their best when they are living, breathing, shared experiences.

Thank you for the gift of being here with us!

We are already planning our 2023–2024 concert season, so I invite you to start planning your calendar for the Fall semester as well. Please be sure to save some dates so that you can return to campus to enjoy our concerts and recitals and to fulfill your critical role in our educational efforts. And if there are young people in your life who are interested in pursuing a college education in music, please encourage them to be in touch with the UK School of Music or one of our faculty members. We would welcome the opportunity to welcome them into our thriving musical community.

Grand Night Lyrics

It's a Grand Night for Singing! from the 1945 film, State Fair
by Rodgers and Hammerstein

SING ALONG WITH US!

All: It’s a Grand Night for Singing,
The moon is flying high,
And somewhere a bird who is bound to be heard,
Is throwing his heart at the sky!
It’s a Grand Night for Singing,
The stars are bright above,
The earth is aglow and to add to the show,
I think I am falling in love!

Low Voices: Maybe it’s more than the moon,
Maybe it’s more than the birds,
Maybe it’s more than the sight of the night
In a light too lovely for words.

High Voices: Maybe it’s more than the Earth,
Shiny and silvery blue,
Maybe the reason I’m feeling this way
Has something to do with you!

All: It’s a Grand Night for Singing,
The stars are bright above,
The earth is aglow and to add to the show,
I think I am falling in love!
Falling, falling in love!
