I am so proud to end the Department of Theatre and Dance 2023-2024 season with Footloose. As a dancer and choreographer, I was immediately drawn to Footloose because of the music and high energy dance numbers. I could not wait to create new and unique dances in this very iconic musical theatre production. As I dove into the script of Footloose, I realized how much the story and characters resonate with our current world and how the enormous messages about humanity, connections, and strength guide the characters’ journey. Theatre is a living art that continually revisits scripts from the past—in the case of Footloose, the recent past. I have enjoyed being in conversation with a work from another era and, in bringing it to life again, exploring its themes and meanings with the creative team and performers. I am excited not only to share the dancing and singing with you, but to bring connections from the stories on the stage to the audience.
I want to thank the many amazing directors that have inspired me and guided me through the making of this production. Thank you to Christina Ritter and Nancy Jones. I also cannot thank Russell Henderson enough. Some of my happiest times at UK was working with Russell in the theatre; watching him craft, create, and inspire. I have learned a great deal from him, and I am so, so happy I had the opportunity to work with Russell so closely.
