THE PROM
April 3 – May 12, 2024
Director's Notes
The Prom is a joyful piece that balances camp, comedy, and flashy musical numbers with an incredibly heart-warming and moving tale. This show follows people from different worlds and ideological notions who are going on a journey to bridge the divide. These differences are represented in varying musical styles and movement qualities that find a way to harmonize. The beauty of these characters lie in their ability to be nuanced, flawed, and loving characters rather than stereotypes. Although based on a news story from over a decade ago, the message of acceptance, inclusivity, chosen family, community, and hope feel as poignant as ever.

For this production we had a unique opportunity to tell this important story by bringing together a cast of both professional performers and pre-professional high school students. The student characters are played by young actors in ZACH Theatre’s Academy and Pre-Professional programs. Having students the same age as the characters who are going through the high school experience right now has brought a whole new layer of truthfulness to the narrative.

This piece is dedicated to all the people who were unable to experience their own prom as their true authentic selves. May this be an opportunity to celebrate a new prom—one filled with love, laughs, and a whole lot of dancing!
