The Honorable Jim Pitts
The Honorable Jim Pitts
With great fondness and deep respect, we dedicate this production of A Christmas Carol to The Honorable Jim Pitts, a beloved friend and passionate advocate for ZACH Theatre. For nearly two decades, Jim generously contributed his time and leadership to help shape ZACH into a cornerstone of Austin’s vibrant cultural landscape.
Jim’s commitment to our community extended far beyond our theater. As a long-tenured state legislator and member of ZACH's Board of Trustees, he championed education and the arts, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. His unwavering dedication, profound legacy and kind generosity continue to inspire us all.
In this 10th anniversary production of an Austin tradition Jim deeply cherished, we have included one of Jim’s favorite songs, “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack, as a special tribute to him. It reflects how Jim lived his life—work hard, play hard, and if the opportunity presents itself Jim encourages us to dance. Wave those light sticks and dance as we honor Jim and his lasting contributions to ZACH, our community and to the State of Texas.
To carry forward his legacy, we established the Jim Pitts Youth Access Fund, ensuring that students from all backgrounds can experience the transformative power of theater. This fund supports ZACH’s educational programs, opening doors to creative expression for thousands of young people who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity.
We are celebrating a decade of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, and I’m filled with gratitude for all the audiences who have joined us to celebrate their holidays over the years, making it the most popular show ZACH produces. One of my goals in building the Topfer Theatre was to create a new holiday tradition for ZACH. For almost 20 years we produced my musical revue Rockin’ Christmas Party to great success at the Paramount Theatre, and later on our campus. Realizing this new DREAM venue called for a new show, and I had been working on an adaptation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL for several years, mixing popular music from multiple generations, carols and contemporary dialogue with a traditional Victorian setting. It has been embraced beyond my wildest dreams!
When creating this adaptation, I had several Austin actors in my mind as I crafted the words they would say, which allowed me to tailor the language to what I knew about them, in and out of the rehearsal room. Scrooge was originally written for Harvey Guion who beautifully performed the role for multiple years, and it was subsequently memorably played by Jaston Williams, Marco Perella, Marc Pouhé, Matt DeCaro, and now Peter Frechette, each adding their own unique interpretation. Roderick Sanford and Kenny Williams have been part of our cast from the very beginning, and Allen Robertson has been my musical collaborator making musical sense of the new song ideas I come up with annually. Kenny, Rod, Allen, and I have worked together for over 30 years, and it is a treasured joy to have friends with whom you share a creative shorthand and who inspire this work that delights so many. Sarah Maines’ lighting design, Susan Branch Towne’s costume design, and Bob Lavalee’s scenic design have been the gorgeous visual anchors of this production since we began.
Charles Dickens’ popular tale of personal transformation, which introduced the phrase “Merry Christmas!” into the culture, endures today for many reasons. Scrooge’s nephew Fred reminds us of the importance of kindness, generosity and community in a world marked by economic disparities and social injustice. Dickens’ story encourages us to reflect on our actions and their impact on those around us who are in need. Scrooge’s redemption offers hope for a brighter future not just for himself but for all the lives he touches, and reminds us that positive change is always possible for ourselves.
When this building was built, ZACH’s Trustees gave me the honor of writing the words on the steps outside which welcome you into this theatre. On the last step before entering our lobby I ask you to “Look to the light.” Tonight I encourage you to wave your light stick in celebration of ten glorious years, and like the Ghost of Christmas Past and Tiny Tina encourage you to do in the play, let YOUR light shine as a beacon to those who need it…let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. Thank you to all of you who have made us your annual holiday tradition—we love being part of your family and look forward to seeing you every season. And for those joining us for the first time, welcome, we’re glad you’re here.
Merry Christmas!
