“Looking to the future rather than just surviving the present was a whole different way of moving through the world.”
Rachel Louise Snyder, No Invisible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us
Waitress is a moving musical that shines a light on issues that we as a culture don’t talk about. I was enthralled with the original film written and directed by Adrienne Shelly when it was released in 2007. It brilliantly blended quirky whimsy with the harsh reality of a woman trapped in a volatile marriage. As it was adapted for the stage, Sara Bareilles’s music perfectly captured that essence with its ability to one minute make you laugh through comedy and satire and the next minute knock the wind out of you.
One of the most beautiful parts of this show is the fact that all of the characters are messy. They are complicated, embodying both the lightness and darkness in the human experience. Every character is in service of Jenna’s story—different ingredients that blend together to help her on her journey. The approach to this production finds all the performers as an ensemble surrounding Jenna, stepping in and out of various characters—most particularly, as Muses that seek to inspire Jenna as she uses the creation of new pies to process the events of her life.
The story highlights female empowerment and the importance of community. The relationship between Jenna and her fellow waitresses Becky and Dawn is incredibly touching. They lift each other up and offer support as they all search for their own voice. The original Broadway production was the first all-female creative team to lead a Broadway show. Likewise, it was important to me to surround this production with female perspectives.
Being able to explore Waitress in an immersive 360 experience has been a dream come true. The intimacy of having audiences so close to the action heightens the emotional impact of the story. Viewers become fellow customers in Joe’s Pie Diner and transform from passive spectators to active participants. Jenna uses baking as a coping mechanism. Baking allows one to stay present in the moment and focus on the visceral experience. It is no coincidence that so many people turned to baking during the uncertainty and upheaval of the pandemic. Audiences are welcomed into the pie creation as characters craft treats onstage throughout the show.
Welcome to Joe’s Pie Diner. Grab a slice of pie at intermission and enjoy Waitress!
