Launched in 1883, the real Orient Express was a marvel of
its time, linking Paris and Istanbul in unprecedented luxury.
It featured fine dining, plush sleeping compartments,
and an international clientele of royalty, diplomats, and artists.
Few mysteries are as enduring, or as deliciously theatrical, as Murder on the Orient Express. Playwright Ken Ludwig, known for his clever dialogue and fast-moving plays, transforms Agatha Christie’s legendary whodunit into a thrilling ensemble piece full of style and sharp humor. It’s the perfect match for the incredible company of artists bringing this story to life at Zach Theater. The suspects pile up quickly, secrets overlap, and the story moves at breakneck speed.
The story itself first captivated readers in 1934, cementing the Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, as one of literature’s most iconic figures alongside France’s Arsène Lupin and England’s Sherlock Holmes. Christie’s inspiration came from her own experiences traveling across Europe by train, including a real-life incident in which she was stranded overnight on a snowbound railway, and the infamous 1932 kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh Jr. Nearly a century later, the mystery still feels fresh, asking big questions beneath the glamour: What is justice? And who gets to decide what’s fair?
The Orient Express wasn’t an invention of fiction. In fact, the Orient Express was so famous that it inspired everything from fashion trends to cocktail names, and its routes changed frequently, meaning “the Orient Express” was less a single train and more a rolling symbol of adventure and sophistication. In our production, the designers modelled the train cars after the actual dimensions and decor of the famed train. Because, after all, the Orient Express is more than a setting. The train itself is the story’s dominant character: entrapping strangers, exposing truths, and refusing to move forward until justice is served.
Historically, the 1930s were a charged and complicated time across the world. In the aftermath of World War I and the economic collapse of 1929, the decade was marked by rebuilding and uncertainty. Borders were fragile, political tensions were rising, and fascism was gaining ground in Germany and Italy. Amid this instability, rail travel became a symbol of modernity and possibility: a space of connection, inclusivity, and international exchange. It is no coincidence that the 1930s are often called the “Golden Age of Detective Fiction.” Audiences craved logic and order at a moment when the real world felt increasingly unpredictable. Perhaps that same desire helps explain the enduring appeal of detective stories and “True Crime” stories today.
For me, this story is a reminder of why we gather in the theater at all: to sit together in the dark, to lean forward at the same moment, and to wrestle collectively with questions that don’t have easy answers. Working on this production with such a generous and fearless group of artists has been a joy, and I’m grateful to share this journey with you tonight. Thank you for joining us aboard the Orient Express.
Enjoy the journey—and keep your eye on everyone. On the Orient Express, no one is ever just a passenger.
