Some stories endure because they ask us to remember. Others endure because they ask us to imagine who we might become. COME FROM AWAY does both. 

When we think of September 11, 2001, our minds naturally turn to images of unimaginable loss. It was a day that shook the world and challenged our faith in one another. Yet amid the darkness, another story unfolded—one not of fear, but of compassion.

When the United States closed its airspace for the first time in history, more than 4,500 aircraft were suddenly without a destination. Thirty-eight planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland. The people there did not stop to ask where anyone came from, what language they spoke, or what they believed. They simply saw people in need. They opened schools, churches, and homes. They cooked meals, found medicine, donated clothing, and offered comfort. For five remarkable days, they made the world feel just a little less frightening.

Their generosity was not born from extraordinary circumstances but from an extraordinary way of life. For generations, Newfoundlanders have inhabited a place where isolation, harsh weather, and economic hardship teach a simple truth: survival depends on one another. Neighbor helping neighbor is not an ideal—it’s a lifestyle.

But COME FROM AWAY is more than a story of Newfoundlanders rescuing stranded travelers. It is a story of mutual transformation. For 126 hours, people from dozens of countries shared meals, music, grief, laughter, uncertainty, and hope. The visitors found safety when the world felt anything but safe. The people of Gander, in turn, discovered that even an island seemingly removed from world affairs could be profoundly changed by events thousands of miles away.

Twenty-five years after the events of 9/11, this musical feels as essential as ever. In a world that often defines us by our differences, COME FROM AWAY reminds us that our shared humanity is stronger than what divides us. It affirms that kindness is rarely grand or theatrical. More often, it is found in ordinary people choosing, moment by moment, to care for someone they have never met.

That spirit has guided our company throughout this process. Like the people of Gander, this story belongs to an ensemble. Every voice supports another. Our turntable reflects a world in constant motion, where one place becomes another with a simple shift in perspective - a reminder that lives are always unfolding simultaneously, often in ways we cannot see. And throughout the show, music becomes the bridge that welcomes strangers, dissolves barriers, and transforms unfamiliar faces into community.

The people of Gander never believed they were heroes. As many later said, they simply did what Newfoundlanders do. Perhaps that is the quiet miracle of COME FROM AWAY: it reminds us that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary kindness. Welcome to Gander. We’re glad you’re here.

ARNIE YÁÑEZ (Drums / Percussion) - Arnie has appeared in over 70 productions at Zach. He works regularly as a performing percussionist playing in local bands and his studio work includes music for radio, TV and film scores.  For 35 years, he has worked as a public school teacher in Austin ISD. Currently, he serves as Associate Director of Bands at Covington Fine Arts Academy. 

Irene Sankoff and David Hein (Book, Music, and Lyrics) Irene and David are a Canadian married writing team. Their first show, My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding (based on David’s mother’s true story) was the hit of the Toronto Fringe Festival, and then picked up for a commercial run by Mirvish Productions. It has now played and won best musical awards in the New York Musical Theatre Festival and across North America, with Sankoff and Hein performing in most productions. COME FROM AWAY was developed at the Canadian Music Theatre Project and Goodspeed Musicals’ Festival of New Artists, showcased at the NAMT Festival of New Works and enjoyed a record setting world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle Repertory, followed by Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto and the Gander Community Centre Hockey Rink. COME FROM AWAY was recently nominated for 14 Helen Hayes Awards. Irene and David are proud members of the Dramatists Guild and ASCAP. Cassie ABATE (Director / Choreographer) - Cassie is the Associate Artistic Director at Zach, and author of the international textbook: The Art and Practice of Musical Theatre Choreography. Zach Theater direction and choreography credits include ANNIE, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, WAITRESS, JERSEY BOYS, BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL, THE PROM, HEAD OVER HEELS, CINDERELLA, THE INHERITANCE, and ONCE.
