Morton Louis Topfer, former Vice Chairman of Dell Technologies who helped turn the company into a multibillion-dollar enterprise, died on September 20, 2023 at age 87.
Born on Sept. 18, 1936, Topfer was one of two children of Sadie and Abraham Topfer. He grew up in the Williamsburg housing project in Brooklyn, but his career took him all over the world.
In 1971, Topfer went to work for Motorola in Florida, where he spent the next 23 years in senior executive positions in the company's global communication business. He retired from Motorola on May 31, 1994. The very next day, he came out of retirement and spent the next eight years working at Dell.
In 2000, The Topfer Family Foundation was formed to help people with limited resources become self-sufficient and make an impact in their communities. Through the foundation, Topfer has been responsible for more than $120 million in donations to various non-profits in Central Texas, Chicago, South Florida, Denver and Brooklyn.
ZACH Theatre mourns the loss of Mort, our beloved patron, namesake and friend. ZACH’ s Topfer Theater was named for Mort and Bobbi Topfer, who were critical to the fundraising campaign to make the completion of the project possible.
Mort was a valued member of ZACH’s Board of Trustees and Finance Committee contributing his keen intellect and business acumen to our strategic initiatives. Together, the Topfers chaired our annual fundraising galas, creating unforgettable events, drawing on Bobbi's unmatched expertise in party and event planning.
Mort's sense of humor, and his vibrant spirit left a lasting impression for anyone fortunate to work alongside him. His laughter and presence at ZACH events and shows will be deeply missed.
Mort and Bobbi's significant legacy lives on in the thousands of students, artists, and audiences who are touched by the magic of ZACH Theatre every year. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Bobbi, the light in Mort's eye, and his cherished family.
Ungorgettable, in every way...
With love and gratitude,
ZACH Theatre
