Katherine Gilchrist is an 8th grade student at Orefield Middle School. She sings in the Bel Canto Youth Chorus of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem led by Dr. Joy Hirokawa. She also studies with vocal teacher Gail Grossman. Kate plays piano, studying with Darlene Ziegler since age 4, and regularly participates in local and national piano competitions and auditions. She also performs in her school musicals and enjoys playing saxophone as first chair in her school’s jazz and concert bands.

In addition to her musical interests, Kate loves all things fashion, including regularly sketching her own designs. She has even studied the science of fashion, examining how fabrics drape, taking her science fair project to the national level as a finalist in the Broadcom MASTERS national science competition. She also created a documentary on the history of fashion and its role in the Women’s Rights movement, showcased at the finals of the state level National History Day competition. Kate is also an editor for her school newspaper, enjoys reading, writing, skiing, and tennis.
