America250: Voices of Virginia brings history to life through music, dance, poetry, and multimedia storytelling in a groundbreaking multidisciplinary concert celebrating 250 years of American stories. Produced by Charlottesville Ballet and Opera on the James, this sweeping work features sixteen artistic vignettes tracing the arc of American democracy—from 1776 to the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and today—through the lens of Virginia voices.
The program includes world premieres and historical reimaginings by choreographers, composers, poets, and musicians from across the Commonwealth, created in collaboration with nine cultural partners and institutions. Drawing on archival texts, oral histories, and community voices, America250: Voices of Virginia offers a powerful, artistically compelling, and civically resonant reflection on our shared past and present.
This production is generously underwritten by Mary Jae Abbitt Sushka & Myron Slovin and Lewis & Bobbi Dunn, and supported, in part, by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250), the National Endowment for the Arts/America250, the Caplin Foundation, Frances J.
