Opera on the James is Central Virginia’s regional opera company and Resident Opera Company at the Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Peter Leonard, the company brings together local, national, and international artists to create dynamic productions that connect audiences to the enduring power of the human voice and great music.
Deeply committed to collaboration, Opera on the James partners with local artists, community organizations, churches, schools, and fellow performing arts groups across the region. This spirit of cooperation is at the heart of projects like America250: Voices of Virginia, which expands the company’s mission through cross-disciplinary and cross-sector partnerships.
A cornerstone of the organization is its nationally recognized Tyler Young Artist Program. Each year, hundreds of singers audition for this highly competitive residency. Selected artists spend five intensive weeks in Lynchburg performing throughout the region in schools, libraries, community centers, concerts, and special events—reaching thousands of people annually and helping cultivate the next generation of operatic talent.
Through performance, education, and collaboration, Opera on the James continues its commitment to broadening access to great art and enriching cultural life throughout Central Virginia.
