Christine Powell-Thomas, a Jamaican-born Mezzo-Soprano, has nurtured her passion for performance from an early age, gaining experience in several performing arts companies. After a successfully completing her degree in Biotechnology, she transitioned to fully embrace her love for music.
During the 2024-2025 season, Christine will be making role debuts as ‘Guccio’ in Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and ‘Madam Kirsten’ in Dan Shore’s The Beautiful Bridegroom with Opera at USC. Additionally, Christine performed with the Southern Exposure: new music series and the BlackBox Ensemble at their fall concert at the University of South Carolina; the USC-Castleton Summer Immersion Program (Castleton, VA), and for the University of South Carolina School of Music’s Centennial Celebration at the Koger Center for the Arts (Columbia, SC). In previous seasons, Christine made her operatic debut as ‘Grace’ in Linda Lister’s State of Grace, ‘Ruggiero’ in Handel’s Alcina both with UM Opera Theatre and performed the role of ‘Taller Daughter’ in Missy Mazzoli's Proving up with Opera at USC. Christine has been a Concert Soloist in Christopher Tin’s The Drop that Contained the Sea, G.F. Handel's Messiah, and W.A. Mozart’s Regina coeli, among other works.
Christine holds degrees from Alcorn State University (Lorman, MS), the University of Mississippi (Oxford, MS) and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of South Carolina (Columbia, SC). Beyond music, Christine cherishes moments with loved ones, savoring laughter and, interestingly, her favorite indulgence – dessert.
