Alice Liu

Pianist Guannan Alice Liu was born and raised in Shenzhen, China. Starting piano at 4, Alice’s love for piano blossomed when she went to Toronto for high school, where she studied piano with Dr. Jeanie Chung and Janet Stanton. Alice received her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Bienen School of Music of Northwestern University where she studied with Dr. Sylvia Wang. She recently received her Performance Studies Diploma and Master’s of Music degree in Piano Performance at Mannes School of Music of the New School studying with Professor J.Y. Song and Ann Schein.

Alice is the winner of Illinois MTNA Competition "Young Artist Performance", Northwestern Concerto/Aria Competition, as well as receiving 1st prize of the Huang Long Piano Competition in China in her category. She is also the recipient of Early Music America Young-Artist Scholarship as well as Northwestern Undergraduate Research Grant.

Alice made her orchestral debut in 2016, performing the Grieg Concerto in a minor with Branksome Hall Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Scott Harbin. She performed the Poulenc Piano Concerto with Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Robert G. Hasty in March, 2020. Her solo performance of Schumann was featured on the documentary Chicago by “L” with Jeoffrey Baer that was broadcasted on Chicago television station WTTW. Alice appeared on New York Classical Music Radio Station WQXR performing Debussy and Leschetizky. She has performed in prestigious performance spaces in the United States such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Steinway Hall, the German Consulate, Old Stone House in Brooklyn and Klavierhaus in Manhattan. Alice has also performed internationally in Germany, Spain, and China. Additionally, Alice enjoys performing collaboratively with both singers and instrumentalists.

Alice recently participated in the Gijón International Piano Festival, Adamant Music School Master Class Series and Saarburg International Music Festival, where she had lessons and masterclasses with world-renowned pianists such as John O’Conor, Logan Skelton, Vladimir Feltsman, James Giles, Jean Saulnier, José Ramón Mendez and Christopher Elton. Her newly discovered passion for fortepiano performance brought her to the Academy of Fortepiano Performance, where she received lessons and
masterclasses with renowned historical keyboard performers such as Pierre Goy, Dr. Yi-heng Yang, Dr. Audrey Axinn, and John Mortensen.
