Kareema is from Fort Myers, Florida however she graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy, an arts boarding school in Northern Michigan. There, Kareema held principal positions in the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and the Interlochen Wind Symphony. At Interlochen, Kareema was a member of the Interlochen Chamber Players and a student conductor. She also made her David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center debut playing in a side by side performance with the New York Philharmonic.
Before Kareema made her journey to Interlochen she was an avid member of the music community in Fort Myers in and outside of school. In school, she was the Drum Major of the Fort Myers High School Marching Band, principal in multiple school ensembles, and a member of Tri-M music honor society. Outside of school, Kareema joined the Gulf Coast Symphony as Assistant Principal oboe at 14, while holding principal positions in the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Southwest Florida Youth Symphony. Kareema also participated in many community outreach programs such as the Southwest Florida Music Foundation, Music Discovery Zones, and church performances.
Kareema’s past private teachers include Jonathan Gentry, Principal Oboe with the Sarasota Orchestra, and Dane Philipsen, Instructor of Oboe at Interlochen Arts Academy.
While Kareema isn’t in the practice room, she enjoys talking, going to church, and spending time with her friends and family.
