Diego Ernesto Mieres Rausseo is a first year masters student in viola performance at The Shepherd school. Originally from Venezuela, Diego is a passionate musician that started his musical path playing piano at the age of 4. After years of playing the instrument, Diego was eager to start playing within ensembles, picking the viola as his primary instrument and joining his school’s orchestra system.
Diego is originally from Caracas, Venezuela, home of El Sistema. The long time presence of this institution in the cultural scene of the country shapes hundreds of young artists' lives. He grew up playing in many different orchestras, sharing and learning from excellent musicians from both inside and outside the country. Diego serves as permanent substitute of the Orquesta de Cámara Simón Bolívar as well as the Baroque Ensemble of the same institution.
Venezuela’s social and political situation made it impossible for Diego to follow his dream in his home country, as he left to the US to continue his studies. He was accepted in Yizhak Schotten’s studio in 2021, in the School of Music Theatre and Dance at the University of Michigan, where he was given the Sphinx Full Scholarship, by the Sphinx Organization. During his time at Michigan, Diego continued to develop his musical voice and teaching ideology with Professor Schotten, learning how to be critical and intentional with every musical note.
Being an international student brought several challenges during college life. Adjusting to a new culture teaches how to respect and enjoy things that aren’t common, besides the constant learning factor that speaking a foreign language represents. These experiences, along with the influence of major pedagogues in Diego’s life—such as Caroline Coade, Kenneth Kiesler, Scott Yoo, Adriana Virguez, Karen Ritscher, and James Dunham—have shaped Diego into a passionate and receptive musician who prioritizes the student–teacher relationship and the individual needs of each student over the mere transmission of material.
Diego has played in masterclasses for the Berlin Philharmonic, Rosamunde Quartet and has participated in summer festivals such as Chautauqua, Center Stage Strings, Colorado College and Interlochen, attending all of these with full scholarship. In 2021 he won the 2nd prize in the MASTA Elizabeth A.H. Strings Solo Competition, and has played with Lansing Symphony Orchestra.
