Gabriel Roth, violinist from Maplewood, NJ, recently finished his third year at Oberlin College and Conservatory, pursuing degrees in History (BA) and Violin Performance (BM), with a minor in Baroque Violin. Growing up in a musical family, he began private violin studies with Deborah Buck of the LARK Quartet at age 14 before attending Oberlin to study with David Bowlin. Next year, he will continue his violin studies under Cleveland Orchestra Acting Concertmaster Jung-Min Amy Lee. At Oberlin, Gabriel is both a John F. Oberlin and Marilyn McDonald Violin Scholarship recipient and has served as concertmaster of the Oberlin Orchestra, Contemporary Music Ensemble, and Baroque Orchestra, with whom he has also performed as soloist. He has also been chosen to represent the Conservatory on both the Oberlin Orientation and Danenberg Honors recitals. A committed Baroque violinist, Gabriel currently studies with Edwin Huizinga, having also previously worked with Marilyn McDonald and Julie Andrijeski. On baroque violin, Gabriel has collaborated in concert with artists such as Elinor Frey and Lillian Gordis, and on multiple occasions with members of the Oberlin Baroque Ensemble. He is also a core member of the Montreal-based Twisted Pearl Baroque Ensemble. Gabriel has performed at Lincoln Center’s Rose Studio and at Carnegie Hall under the auspices of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Oberlin Conservatory, respectively. He has participated in masterclasses and workshops with members of the Jasper, Shanghai, American, Calidore, LARK, Cavani, Attaca, Verona, and Meta4 quartets, as well as artists such as Joan Kwuon, Carmit Zori, Jérôme Hantaï, and Olivier Brault. He is also privileged to have been heard nationally on American Public Media’s Performance Today®. In recent summers, Gabriel has held full scholarships or fellowships at the Round Top Festival Institute, the Kinhaven Young Artists’ Seminar, and the Chautauqua Institution. This summer, he is excited to participate in the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute and also return to both Kinhaven and Chautauqua.
