Eric Byers

Praised as “ideally eloquent” by the Los Angeles Times, cellist Eric Byers captivates audiences as a soloist, chamber musician, and composer.

At 18, Byers made his solo debut with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. His career has taken him to stages including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Edinburgh Festival, and Esterházy Palace. In 2018, he stepped in last-minute to perform with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, earning praise for playing B.A. Zimmermann’s Cello Concerto in a way that was

described as “rapturously played” and “utterly convincing.” His performances of works by Thomas Adès and Kaija Saariaho have drawn equally fervent notices, with the LA Times calling his solo playing at Disney Hall “ethereal.”

As a founding member of the Calder Quartet, called “one of America’s great string quartets” by the Los Angeles Times, Byers this season celebrated the ensemble’s Carnegie Hall debut with an all-American program at Weill Recital Hall. Reviewing the concert, the New York Classical Review singled out Byers’ solo lines as exceptional. Winners of the 2014 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2009 ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award, the quartet has commissioned dozens of new works and recently released their seventh album, Climb.

Byers’ other chamber music collaborators have included Joshua Bell, Edgar Meyer, Menahem Pressler, Joseph Kalichstein, Claude Frank, and his wife Lucia Micarelli. Byers served as guest principal of Pasadena Symphony, Long Beach Symphony and of Pacific Symphony for its Carnegie Hall debut and tour of China in 2018.

Byers has recorded on hundreds of film and television scores, with credits spanning Oppenheimer, Avatar, La La Land, Lion King, A Quiet Place, Encanto, Frozen II, The Mandalorian, and Everything Everywhere all at Once. He has performed as soloist on Yellowstone, Outlander, The Lord of the Rings, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and The Professor and the Madman among others.

Byers has taught at the Colburn School and Oberlin College Conservatory and given masterclasses at Juilliard, Cincinnati Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute, USC, the Aspen Music Festival, and UCLA. He holds a Bachelor of Music from USC Thornton, a Professional Studies Certificate from Colburn Conservatory, and an Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School.
