Shrine of the Ages Choir

Shrine of the Ages Choir is comprised of passionate singers from many majors across Northern Arizona University and the Kitt School of Music. Through our shared mission of artistic expression through diverse choral music, we are committed to transforming communities through outreach and inspiring performances. We seek to build bridges of understanding through music initiatives that engage with today’schallenges and opportunities to pursue a more just, inclusive, and creative world.

Founded in 1933 under the direction of Eldon “Pop” Ardrey, the NAU Shrine of the Ages Choir’s name originates in singing at the Grand Canyon Easter Sunrise Service on the South Rim at the site of its namesake, The Shrine of the Ages. This service was broadcast nationally over NBC radio stations until 1968, including overseas during WWII. From 1955 to 1983, Shrine was conducted by Millard “Mel” Kinney, and in 1983 the choir’s name changed to University Chorale. Under the leadership of Jo-Michael Scheibe, NAU’s choral program thrived between 1985-1993. In honor of NAU’s 1999 Centennial Celebration, Dr. Edith A. Copley changed the name back to the “Shrine of the Ages Choir.” Shrine’s performances span from Carnegie Hall to “Star Wars: In Concert,” and at regional and national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education. Shrine tours regionally and internationally, including the People’s Republic of China, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Bulgaria, Turkey, Sweden, Estonia, and Latvia, exploring global cultures by partnering with choirs in those countries.

Master Chorale of Flagstaff

The Master Chorale of Flagstaff (MCF) has been bringing exceptional vocal performance into the heart of northern Arizona since 1977, showcasing a wide variety of musical styles, traditions, and innovations. Comprised of adult singers across many occupations from Flagstaff and surrounding communities, our award-winning chorus is a leader in musical collaboration.
Recognizing the value of music as a healing, unifying, and educational tool, the Master Chorale draws from the experiences of the performers, the surrounding community, and global influences and mindsets. Our repertoire reflects the value of music as both a constant and constantly evolving entity, spanning from historical choral treasures to music by underrepresented composers that engages with contemporary concerns and causes. By joining in song with long-cherished ensembles such as the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra and the vocal and instrumental musicians of Northern Arizona University, as well as budding performers from Flagstaff’s K-12 schools, each concert is crafted to move audiences to joy, heartfelt reflection, and even action.
