Dear Friends of FSO

Dear Friends,

Welcome to a new season of exquisite music brought to life by the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. As the Board President and Executive Director, it is our great pleasure to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to each of you.

Our orchestra is a testament to the power of music to inspire, heal, and unite. Throughout history, orchestras have served as a source of solace during challenging times and a beacon of hope for a brighter future. Now, as we embark on Season 74, we are thrilled to share the timeless beauty and innovation of orchestral music with you once more.

The 2023-24 season promises to be a remarkable journey through the rich tapestry of orchestral music. From classic masterpieces to the bold and innovative compositions of contemporary artists, our repertoire has been carefully curated to stir your emotions and ignite your imagination.

We are incredibly fortunate to have a world-class ensemble of musicians led by our esteemed Music Director Charles Latshaw, whose passion and expertise infuse each performance with a profound sense of artistry and depth. Together, the musicians, board and staff of FSO are dedicated to delivering unparalleled musical experiences that will resonate with you and leave you inspired.

As we look ahead, we also remain committed to FSO’s mission of fostering musical education and enriching our community. Through our educational and community outreach programs, we strive to nurture the next generation of musicians and cultivate an enduring love for orchestral music among young minds. None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our patrons, sponsors, volunteers, and the entire FSO family. Your dedication to the arts is the cornerstone of our success, and we are immensely grateful for your ongoing support.

We invite you to immerse yourself in the magic of music with us this season. Join us for performances that will transport you to distant lands, evoke profound emotions, and inspire new perspectives. Whether you are a seasoned concertgoer or experiencing the symphony for the first time, you are an integral part of our musical journey.

Thank you for choosing to be a part of the FSO community. We eagerly anticipate sharing the beauty and passion of orchestral music with you throughout this season.

Sincerely,

Mission
To enrich, engage, and inspire our community through the performance of orchestral music

FSO Statement on Diversity and Inclusion

The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra recognizes the importance of diversity and inclusion and has been working to address it in authentic and purposeful ways. We are actively seeking to increase diversity and inclusion

in our organization through our programming, our Board make-up, and our outreach. Our purpose is not to seek diversity for diversity’s sake alone, but to more readily include all parts of our community who share our goals and wish to be supportive.

For the orchestra, achieving diversity means affirming the inclusion and involvement of
a broad representation of our community, reflecting its true make-up. We recognize that diversity exists in multiple dimensions, including differences among people that are not immediately visible. Among these are race, ethnicity, and cultural background, gender, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, disabilities, education, geography, and religion. The FSO pledges to promote diversity within its board and staff and ensure inclusive and diverse programming.

From Our Conductor

Hello, FSO Friends and Family, and welcome to our 2023-24 season!

It is with immense pleasure and excitement that I welcome you to the 74th season of your Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, “Breaking Sound Barriers.” As we gather once again to celebrate the beauty and power of music, I am filled with gratitude for your unwavering support and dedication to the arts.

This season promises to be a remarkable journey through the rich tapestry of classical and contemporary compositions. Our dedicated musicians have poured their hearts and souls into crafting performances that will uplift, inspire, and move you. From the grandeur of symphonies to the intimacy of chamber music, each concert has been meticulously designed to transport you to different emotional landscapes.

The FSO prides itself on presenting new works alongside the masterpieces of the past, and this season we’re excited to celebrate many remarkable women composers and performers of note:

  • Our own dearly departed Judith Cloud, local composer, singer, and educator – whose HiJinx for Clarinet and Orchestra we’ll feature on our opening program in September, with Jun Watabe, soloist.
  • Mexican-American composer Gabriela Ortiz, with her wildly exciting Kauyumari in October.
  • Soul singer Morgan James – a performer I’ve been excited to work with for more than half a decade, with a voice and talent like nothing I’ve ever heard.
  • Vox Astra, the treble voice choir from Northern Arizona University, who are joining FSO, Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival, and the NAU Community Music and Dance Ballet Troupe for a grand production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with music by Felix Mendelssohn.
  • Two new works in our April concert by Mary D. Watkins and Jocelyn Hagen, which we’ll present with the FSO and combined choirs of NAU Shrine of the Ages and Master Chorale of Flagstaff.

Other major works I’m excited to share with you:

  • September: Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Symphony is a massive undertaking and, probably the most lushly beautiful and romantic piece written in the 20th century.
  • October: We’ll present Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique, along with some extra material in which we’ll discuss this monumental work’s place in music history as well as the wild and outrageous story buried within the notes. It’s the perfect spooky Halloween repertoire!
  • December: It’s a great pleasure every year to present Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker along with the NAU Community Music and Dance Academy’s ballet program. Very few orchestras perform the original, large orchestra version that we present and our production is a great source of pride. If you’ve never attended, do yourself a favor and come remind yourself why The Nutcracker is still the world’s most famous ballet!

I encourage you to explore the diverse array of programs we have prepared for you this season. Whether you are a seasoned aficionado or a newcomer to the world of orchestral music, there is something for everyone to discover and enjoy.

I extend my deepest gratitude to our sponsors, patrons, and community partners whose support has made this season possible. Your dedication to the arts fuels our passion and enables us to continue bringing world-class performances to our beloved city.

Thank you for being a part of our musical family. Your presence enriches our performances, and we eagerly anticipate sharing this exceptional season with you. It is a great honor and privilege to be stepping up to the podium again for my seventh season with the FSO. Thank you all so very much for your support of Flagstaff’s musical family, and happy listening!  As always, I want to know your thoughts on the FSO’s programming and performances.  Please email me anytime at clatshaw@flagstaffsymphony.org
