Born into poverty during the struggle of apartheid in South Africa, Jonathan Butler had a grimmer start to life than most. His father presented him with a one-string guitar and little did his family know, that would begin the journey to the musical phenom he is today.
As a young teen, Jonathan won a local talent contest that opened up the opportunity to travel across South Africa with a musical touring company. It was also during his early teen years that his musical talent caught the attention of British record producer, Clive Caulder; who would ultimately sign Jonathan to his record label, Jive Records. It was with Jive Records that his first single shattered racial barriers as he became the first black artist played by white radio stations in South Africa. Jazz Times describes his style as, “music that crosses boundaries between pop, R&B, smooth jazz, and gospel.”
Jonathan Butler has carved out a space of his own in music history. From overcoming apartheid to touring the world, Jonathan loves spreading his message of unity through his music. A deeply spiritual and religious man, Jonathan continues to perform with an air of playfulness and resiliency. He has dedicated his life to being a devoted father, grandfather, and loyal citizen to his native country.
