Jean Sibelius, born into the late Romantic and early Modern eras, was a composer from Finland. His musical contributions helped Finland establish a national identity that was separate from Russian influence. Finlandia, composed in 1899, is a tone poem of Finnish history and culture. This piece was infamous for its avoidance of Russian censorship by using pseudonyms for various performances. The piece uses a fair amount of rough and turbulent music to symbolize the plight of the people of Finland but, at the end, a calming melody known as the Finlandia Hymn takes over. This melody is one of Sibelius’ original compositions that he wrote to symbolize a new future for the Finnish people.
