Piano Concerto in G Minor, Mendelssohn

Piano concerto No. 1 in G minor by Felix Mendelssohn was composed in Munich in 1831, right after returning from his time in Italy. Mendelssohn was only about 21 years old and was already becoming a prolific and rather popular composer. He himself gave the first performance of this concerto after finishing it in only 3 days. The first movement of this impressive work begins with a stormy introduction in the orchestra, leading quickly to the entry of the piano. The first theme is heard right away in the piano and is then later repeated in the orchestra. Soon, the piece leads into the lyrical second theme. Mendelssohn beautifully develops these themes and ideas throughout this first movement and the rest of the work as well.
