Vivian Chang
Violin

Vivian Chang, age 18, is a senior at Mason High School. She has been studying violin with Hong Cheng since age 4. Chang has served as concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestras, her school orchestra and OMEA’s Regional and All-State orchestras. In 2023, Chang was accepted into Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra NYO2, joining NYO's Dominican Republic concert tour and cross-cultural activities as music ambassador of American youth.

Chang’s accomplishments in young artist and concerto competitions have earned her featured soloist opportunities with the Dayton Philharmonic, Louisville Orchestra, Blue Ash and Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, Mason Symphony and Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra. Winning first place in the 2025 CSYO Concerto Competition has fulfilled her dream to create music together with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and CSO Youth Side by Side.

Winning first place and the Judges’ Distinction Award at the American Protégé International Concerto Competition in 2023 and first prize at the Barcelona "Grand Prize Virtuoso" International Music Competition in 2024, Chang is also the 2024 winner of the Tri-State String Competition, 2022 first place winner of the Senior Strings Division in the Fiorito International Music Festival, and three-time state winner of the OMTA Buckeye Auditions. In 2024, Chang became a national finalist (one of seven finalists from 2,000+ entrants) of the Music Teachers National Association’s Senior Strings Performance Competition, representing string players from the East Central Division of IL, MI, OH, WI and IN on MTNA’s national competition stage in Atlanta. Besides winning top prize in the 2022 Maestro of Tomorrow Competition by Cincinnati Public Radio, and the 2021 Young Talent Search by Dayton Public Radio Discover Classical, Chang was National Public Radio’s From the Top Finalist and will be featured on From the Top’s “Daily Joy” program in 2025.

Passionate about bettering the community with her talent, Chang has been avidly advocating for music education equity and music for all, in her work as student government president, youth leader for non-profit organizations, government intern, and involvement in programs such as Carnegie Hall’s Link Up recordings with NYO, the Do Re Mi Project, the CSO’s Second Saturday Series and Cincinnati ArtsWave. Chang is grateful that her life has been profoundly enriched, inspired, and uplifted by music. She will continue with her music passion to make meaningful impacts at college and beyond.
