Elizabeth Freimuth
Horn

Elizabeth Freimuth, currently on a leave of absence from her position as Principal Horn with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, is Professor of Horn at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Before joining the CSO in 2006, Freimuth was principal horn of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra (2005–06), principal horn of the Kansas City Symphony (2000–05) and assistant principal/utility horn of the Colorado Symphony (1998–2000).

Freimuth has performed as the featured soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Butler County Symphony (PA), Johnson City Symphony Orchestra (TN), Overland Park Symphony (KS) and the Lakewood Symphony (CO). She has also performed as guest principal horn with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, KBS Symphony (Korea), Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony. She has been a featured artist at international horn symposiums at Ball State University (2018) and the University of Memphis (2013), as well as for the International Women’s Brass Conference at the University of Northern Kentucky (2014). 

Freimuth has also served as an Adjunct instructor at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (2011–24). From 2002 to 2005, she was the horn teacher at the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory of Music. She has given numerous masterclasses and has done guest teaching at the New World Symphony in Miami, Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, Eastman School of Music, Rice University, Beijing Conservatory in China, University of Evansville, San Francisco Conservatory, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Dayton, West Virginia University, Ohio State University, University of Northern Colorado and the University of Northern Iowa and Interlochen School of the Arts. In 2011, she was the distinguished featured artist and clinician at Blast of Brass, a summer brass intensive for students in Dallas.

During the summer, Freimuth plays at the Sun Valley Music Festival, and, since 2015, she has been a principal horn and teaching faculty member at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. Since 2019, she has co-hosted a summer horn intensive at the Eastman School of Music for high school and pre-professional students.

 In 2022, Freimuth was invited to serve on the board of directors for the International Horn Competition of America and is the competition’s co-director.

Freimuth is a graduate and recipient of the coveted Performer's Certificate of the Eastman School of Music (B.M. Horn Performance and B.M. Instrumental Music Education). She was a student of Verne Reynolds and W. Peter Kurau. She is also a graduate of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music (M.M.)
