Nouveau Program

The Nouveau Program was co-founded in 2007 by Marion Peraza and Kathy Finley (who was the CSO’s Community Engagement and Diversity Manager at the time) to support increased participation in classical music by African American and Latine student musicians and to provide equitable opportunities for music study and performance. The Multicultural Awareness Council is a proud supporter of the Nouveau Program and has assisted in the development of the program.
Nouveau offers four areas of study for young instrumentalists: Novice was developed for beginning string players; Apprentice is for intermediate to advanced string students; Chamber Players is for up to eight advanced string students; and Winds offers opportunities for woodwind and brass players in grades 9–12 who are at intermediate and advanced levels.
Students receive weekly chamber coaching, performance opportunities throughout the season, and access to special workshops. Since its creation, 80 students have participated in the Nouveau Program.
