IPO is pleased to present Matthew Lipman this evening as he performs the World Premiere of John Williams’ Schindler’s List for orchestra and solo viola. This is especially exciting as Mr. Williams rewrote this piece especially for Matt for a special project to be announced in the coming months.
The New York Times praised American violist Matthew Lipman for his “rich tone and elegant phrasing”, who, in addition to his ongoing relationship with the IPO, has appeared as soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, American Symphony Orchestra, Munich Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Resonanz, and Minnesota Orchestra. He has performed recitals at Carnegie Hall, Aspen Music Festival, and the Zürich Tonhalle; as a guest artist at the New World Symphony Viola Visions Festival; in chamber music at the Berlin Philharmonie and Vienna Musikverein; and on PBS Great Performances and the Violin Channel Vanguard Series. Lipman performs regularly in New York and on tour with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, as the recipient of the inaugural Wallach Artists Chair. His solo recording debut was with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sir Neville Marriner, and he has since released records on Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, and Cedille Records. In addition to his innovative work as Paul Verlaine on the film A. Rimbaud by Patrick Wang, he has premiered works by Clarice Assad, Andreia Pinto Correia, Helen Grime, David Serkin Ludwig, Dmitri Shostakovich, Joel Thompson, and John Williams. Lipman is on faculty at Stony Brook University, and was the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and major prize winner at the Primrose and Tertis International Viola Competitions. He performs on a 2021 Samuel Zygmuntowicz viola, made for him in New York, and loves to play tennis and design floor plans in his free time.
