A passionate and enthusiastic teacher, Katie Liaw has worked with students for 15 years through cello lessons, public school orchestra teaching, and conducting with the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra. Katie graduated from The University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. After several years of school teaching, she went on to earn a Master of Music Education from The Hartt School at the University of Hartford.

Katie became involved with the KSYO as a UT student in 2006. Over the years, she has served the organization as a rehearsal assistant, coach, assistant conductor, stage manager, and building host for Monday rehearsals and string camp. She is thrilled to finally make her debut as conductor of the Youth Chamber Orchestra.

Katie is taking a break from public school teaching to stay home with her two busy children, Locke and Lana. When she gets the rare opportunity to relax, Katie enjoys reading, arranging music, and trying new recipes.
