Overture (2022)
Jessie Montgomery

Jessie Montgomery was born in New York City on December 8, 1981. Overture is scored for two flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, two trombones, timpani, and strings. Approximate performance time is five minutes.

Overture is a brief and vibrant work by the American composer, violinist, and educator Jessie Montgomery. Montgomery is a professor of violin and composition at The New School in Manhattan. She is currently Mead Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a three-year appointment that began in May 2021. For more than two decades, Jessie Montgomery has been affiliated with The Sphinx Organization, devoted to nurturing classical music talent in the African American and Latinx communities. Montgomery has served as composer-in-residence for the Organization’s flagship professional touring ensemble, the Sphinx Virtuosi.

Overture is a one-movement orchestral tutti steeped in harmonic textures inspired by a fusion between jazz and American classical harmonies, Baroque rhythmic gestures, and polyphonic tension.
