The prints in the Colorado Print Educators exhibit echo my thoughts regarding complex events in our world and how they feel tangled.
The work began at an artist residency in the west of Ireland. The rural landscape of the Burren is unique in terms of geology, flora, and cultural history. I was there when the lockdown began and the extended time in this location has changed how I think about pretty much everything.
The prints began by observing invasive plant species and led to drawn and constructed snarled, knotted images. The low-tech process of trace monotype gives a line quality not reachable in other print mediums. The soft line and subsequent opportunity for relief or white line layers adds to the tangle. For me, the work acts as a process of drawing while thinking, while pondering, and reflects the time it takes to sort out one’s thoughts.
