Gonzalo Garcia is a celebrated international artist, mentor, and arts leader whose 25-year career spans San Francisco Ballet and New York City Ballet. Born in Zaragoza, Spain, he began training at age eight under María de Ávila and, at 15, became the youngest-ever gold medalist at the Prix de Lausanne.
Garcia joined San Francisco Ballet, rising to principal dancer in 2002, before joining New York City Ballet as a principal dancer in 2007. Over 15 years with NYCB, he became known for his interpretations of works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins and originated roles in ballets by Justin Peck, Alexei Ratmansky, Christopher Wheeldon, and Helgi Tomasson. He was also coached by Mikhail Baryshnikov for Robbins’ Opus 19/The Dreamer and performed internationally as a guest artist.
After retiring from the stage in 2022, Garcia was appointed Repertory Director at NYCB, coaching leading dancers in works including Jewels, Symphony in C, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Swan Lake. He also served on the faculty of the School of American Ballet, mentoring dancers in the Balanchine tradition and helping prepare the next generation of artists.
Garcia has appeared internationally with Paris Opera Ballet, the Mariinsky Theatre, Juilliard, ABT’s JKO School, and other leading institutions. His honors include the Princess Grace Award, Isadora Duncan Award, and a nomination for the Benois de la Danse. At Miami City Ballet, he brings a global perspective, deep artistic integrity, and a commitment to honoring tradition while expanding the company’s artistic future through thoughtful coaching, mentorship, collaboration, and creative exploration.
