Bebê. Hermeto Pascoal (arr. K. Harding). Hermeto Pascoal, a self-taught composer, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist, who died in September, was a consistently courageous and imaginative artist who contributed greatly to Brazil’s sense of its musical self. This tune is in the baiao style from Brazil’s Northeast.
Linda Flor. Henrique Vogeler, Luiz Peixoto (arr. K Harding). This 1928 ballad helped define the samba-canção genre, which was popular in Rio de Janeiro from the 1930s into the 50s. The songs were lush, often harmonically complex, with lyrics that tended to address the joys and pitfalls of romantic love.
Lamento. Antônio Carlos Jobim A classic samba tune from the master. Recorded initially in 1967.
