Benjamin Varner
Fellow, John Downey Creation Project

Ben Varner is a senior graduating from Pewaukee High School this May. Ben started playing euphonium at age 10, and this is his third year in MYSO, currently playing trombone in the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

Ben started composing for fun in elementary school, and his appreciation for music theory and the medium as a means of expression are what has kept him doing it. His favorite composer to listen to and draw inspiration from is Tchaikovsky.

Ben plans to attend UW-Madison in the fall to study political science and economics and intends to continue with music in some of the school's many instrumental and choral ensembles.

From Greek ("examination, consideration, doubt"), Sképsis is a work meant to portray the process of personal introspection, leading to intense thought, self-doubt, and realization.
