Kelvin Benion, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, is a graduate of Huffman High School, where he was an active member of the band program under the direction of Clifford M. Winter III. In high school, he performed on tuba and was selected to participate in numerous honor ensembles, including the Alabama All-State Blue and White Bands. Kelvin currently serves as the Director of Bands at Clay-Chalkville High School (Jefferson County Schools).
After graduation, he attended South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina, where he performed with the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Merchandising and Management in 1992. While in college, Kelvin founded the jazz group Tekneek, which later released two chart-topping and award-nominated albums: Point of View (1998) and Joyride (2004).
Kelvin began his teaching career in 2010 at W. J. Christian School (Birmingham City Schools). He later served as Assistant Band Director at Minor High School (Jefferson County Schools), where the band earned three National High Stepping Championships and yielded two high-performing jazz ensembles. After three years at Minor, Kelvin founded and directed the band program at Mae Jemison High School (Huntsville City Schools) before accepting his current position at Clay Chalkville High School.
In addition to his educational career, Kelvin released his debut solo project in 2014 titled Got to Get It, with the title track featuring Eric Essix. In 2020, he produced several songs for the FOX Soul network and secured smooth jazz placements with Perpetual Music Group. Kelvin has performed and collaborated with renowned musicians and producers, including Ben Tankard, Henry Panion III, Phil Davis, Milton Davis, Mike Phillips, Dennis Edwards, Me’lissa Morgan, David Peaston, Stevie Wonder, Ernie Watts, Jessy J, Kenny Lattimore, Eric Essix, and Kim Scott. Kelvin currently serves as the Alabama Bandmasters Association (ABA) Jazz Chair for 2025–2027, a statewide leadership role supporting jazz education and performance.
Married to Crishina Benion for 25 years, Kelvin is the proud father of three children: Jeseca Spencer (stepdaughter), Kennedy, and Kaleb. He is also a member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity.
