Carlos Izcaray
Requiem

REQUIEM

English texts by Carlos Izcaray.

To my dearest Yolanda, with eternal love.

1. Introduction - Ashes of War

Our songs are muted

by the ashes of war

Dead voices entrapped

in hopeless laments

For all that was known

has burned and perished,

and the scars of the soil

are the entombment of our dreams

2. Wounded Souls

Wounded souls,

let us rescue your stories!

We mourn and celebrate you

through myth and tales.

We’re unprepared

to meet our Creator,

so we carry our cross

with grieving hearts,

and songs of love.

3. Branches in the Wind

You stood by me,

and learned my name.

You judged me not

and trusted blindly.

We shared no roots,

nor soil, or stream,

yet our arms embrace

like branches in the wind.

4. Spark of Life - Lux Aeterna

Spark of life

You were almost a dream

beauty eternal

innocent bliss

Rest In Peace, my dear angel

The warmth is in you,

for you are the light.

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine,

May everlasting light shine upon them, O Lord,

cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,

with thy saints in eternity,

quia pius es.

for thou art merciful.

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine,

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,

et lux perpetua luceat eis,

and may everlasting light shine upon them,

quia pius es.

for thou art merciful.

5. The Twelfth Hour

No more sight

past the running

of the clock.

Very few know

the sound

of the twelfth hour.

Vague memories resurface

as vaulted lessons

muscled from afar,

both in time and space.

6. Dies Irae

Dies irae, dies illa

The day of wrath, that day,

Solvet saeclum in favilla

will dissolve the world in ashes

Quantum tremor est futurus,

How great will be the quaking,

Quando iudex est venturus

when the Judge is about to come,

Tuba mirum spargens sonum

The trumpet, scattering a wondrous sound

Per sepulcra regionum.

through the sepulchers of the regions,

Mors stupebit et natura,

Death and nature will marvel,

Cum resurgent creatura.

when the creature will rise again,

Liber scriptus proferetur,

The written book will be brought forth,

In quo totum continetur

in which all is contained,

Iudex ergo cum sedebit,

When therefore the Judge will sit,

Nil inultum remanebit.

nothing will remain unpunished.

Iuste iudex ultionis,

Just Judge of vengeance,

ante diem rationis

before the day of reckoning.

Qui Mariam absolvisit

I sigh, like the guilty one

Mihi quoque spem dedisti.

Spare the imploring one, O God.

7. Lacrimosa

Lacrimosa dies illa,

Full of tears will be that day

Qua resurget ex favilla

When from the ashes shall arise

Judicandus homo reus:

The guilty man to be judged:

Huic ergo parce, Deus.

Therefore spare him, O God.

8. Pie Jesu

Pie Jesu Domine,

Pious Lord Jesus,

dona eis requiem.

Give them rest.

Amen.

Amen.

9. Deus Maiestatis

O tu, Deus maiestatis

You, God of majesty,

alme candor Trinitatis,

gracious splendor of the Trinity

nos coniunge cum beatis.

conjoin us with the blessed

Amen.

Amen.
