Originally from Grands Rapids, MI, tenor Nicholas Music is an up-and-coming artist who is recognized for his sensitive expression and versatility. He is now based in Ann Arbor where he completed a Master of Music in Voice Performance at the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Freda Herseth. Nicholas regularly appears on the concert stage and in art song recitals, and he is fond of collaborating with friends and colleagues.
Some of Mr. Music’s recent operatic roles include Ferrando in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Candide in Bernstein’s Candide, Peter Quint in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Le Mari in Poulenc’s Les mamelles de Tirésias, Flute in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Oronte in Handel’s Alcina. He was praised by Cleveland Classical for his “superhuman expressive power and fine nuance” for his performance as the Boy Angel in Du Yun’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera, Angel’s Bone.
Nicholas is a recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, including the Vocal Arts Ensemble’s Professional Pathway Award and the Voices of Canton VOCI Scholarship. He was also named a Rubin Scholar by mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne during her residency at Oberlin Conservatory. Nicholas completed his undergraduate studies at Oberlin, where he received a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance.
