Zachary Hugo
baritone (Rock Hill, SC)

Returning to the stage this season in his debut as the title role in Troy Opera’s production of Rigoletto, American baritone Zachary Hugo is quickly establishing himself as a leading interpreter of the Verdi and Verismo repertoire.  Mr. Hugo’s acclaimed “vibrant and ringing” sound has also been seen this season as Sharpless in Salisbury Opera Festival’s production of Madama Butterfly.  Notable engagements include Silvio (I Pagliacci) with Opera Experience Southeast, Marcello (La Bohème) with Central Piedmont Opera, the title role in Gianni Schicchi with South Carolina Opera, Schaunard (La Bohème) with Little Opera Company of Charlotte, and Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) with Opera Experience Southeast.

No stranger to the concert stage, Mr. Hugo has also appeared this season with the York Choral Society for performances of Handel’s Messiah. His extensive oratorio work includes performances of Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Duruflé’s Requiem, and Finzi’s In Terra Pax.

Mr. Hugo’s training includes graduate studies in conducting, leading to productions of Gluck’s Orpheé et Eurydice, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and Mozart’s Così fan tutte under his baton. This experience on both sides of the stage provides Mr. Hugo additional insight in his approach to musical interpretation.
